The lions of Tsavo

I just got finished reading a book called "the lions of Tsavo". In case you do not know the story, it starts when the British are buliding the railroad in southern Africa in a place called Tsavo. Then, the killings started to happen. Every night, a workers scream was heard and all that was found of him was a blood trail leading into the woods (they later find the killer to be lions). These Lions were so focused on getting these workers that they would dig under the thorn barriers built to stop the killings and drag the workers out to kill them. Here are some of the theories why:

  • Tsavo used to be a slave highway and slave traders were known to dump bodies there
  • some Hindu workers were known to practice a burial ceremony in which they would simply let the bodies rot in the open.
  • disease had wiped out the natural prey of the lions (warthogs, zebra, gazelle) so it left the lions with few choices.
